You got a resolution which is not the standard of the display. What Linux-Distribution
and X version are you using?
Try the "vga=791" when lilo or grub or whatever asks for kernel parameters. Eventually
you have to reconfigure X. On RedHat 7.2 (X 4.1.0) this works.
