1) use console mode if X is screwed up. As root. do "init 3". You can also 
edit /etc/inittab so that it starts in runlevel 3 and not 5, at least until 
you get the X server working. If you need a prompt, try CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6 for 
most distros, you'll get a console.

If you are going to use Linux (or any variety of Unix, for that matter) you 
must get familiar/semi-comfortable with the console. While you are trying to 
figure out how to get X working, take the time to learn Vi[m] or Emacs, or 
explore the man pages and info pages that comes with your system.

2) What are the problems you are seeing? If the mouse if screwed up, what 
mouse are you using? Be sure to take a peek at your old XF85Config file and 
compare notes with the new one. You'll learn a lot.

And the best thing to do is to get rid of the MCSE after your name. Put BS or 
whatnot, or just leave it blank, please. At least everyone knows that "BS" 
stands for BullS**t. Noone is quite certain what MCSE stands for yet...
