what distribution are you running? did you use the distribution's
packages, or did you use binaries from xfree86.org? (your distro's binaries
may be better).

if you were in the Minneapolis area, I'd say to come on over to
Codeweavers tomorrow, where TCLUG (Twin Cities Linux Users Group) is having
an installfest. one way or another, I'm sure I could make your card work.
I installed X 4.0.3 on a Radeon once (back when 4.0.3 was current). after
some tweaking with xvidtune, I did actually manage to get a half-usable
screen... literally, since the top half was usable, and the bottom half
wasnt. ;>
I built a kernel with framebuffer support, tho; and used the framebuffer X
server; and got the display to work just fine. so I know it can be at least
made to produce usable output. :)
I hear that DRI even works now (with X 4.1.0.1); so you should be able to
get 3D acceleration working.
