Did you download the precompiled binaries or the source code and compile it? Always keep your old XF86Config around, even if you are doing a major upgrade. It's saved my butt more than once. If you haven't, go copy XF86Config that works into root and keep it safe. You can go the extra mile and keep a backup of the entire /usr/X11R6 directory structure as well if you like. As I try to tune my X server, I always keep a set of XF86Config files that worked and didn't work. Just some habits I had from working in a lab at college - you ALWAYS take notes and you ALWAYS record as much data as possible. > Anyways, at least it boots up in runlevel 3 all the time > Time to use the console, eh? It's one of the reasons I learned vi, but emacs is just as good. It's great when things are really screwed up. > Well... There are drivers for the radeon that are in the newer kernels (I am using 2.4.14), so you'll either have to compile them into the kernel or provide them as a module. I know it sound like a pain to compile the kernel, but it really isn't as hard as it sounds. Read the howto on compiling and installing a new kernel, and don't be afraid to ask questions. The hardest part of installing a new kernel is remembering to run lilo. And that's not that hard. > > I am on my 7th install this week, and it is really getting on my nerves Just remember, if you were using windows, you wouldn't be able to do a thing about your problems. Sure, you could call tech support, but ... Don't get frustrated - you *can* solve the problem, you will get your radeon working, and it will be *smoother* than butter. The solution is always a lot simpler than you'd expect, but hindsight is alway 20/20. Keep reading the manual, keep trying to figure things out. Don't give up.
