Here is all the info on the onboard chip on my mobo, if more is needed,
I can open up the box and look on the actual chip or run a few tests.
At boot up,
86C370
SuperProbe says,
S3 (unknown)
Sigdata el8a2502
Mem. 8192 K
RAMDAC Gen. 8-bit
pseudo-color DAC
w/ 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode)
The mobo manual says,
VIA S3 Chipset (VT8605)
I don't know if it will help, but the mobo is a Shuttle MV17/E. I've
noticed that there is support listed for many S3 chips. Mine seems to fall
in between two listed, at least numerically. They are,
86C365 (Trio3d) Generic VGA
86C375 (generic) S3 ViRGE/DX
I've tried using the former, 86C365, but the performance is barely
usable. The screen size can go no higher than 640x480 w/ only 8 colors.
There is a linux driver on the mobo CD-ROM. It says that it is an optimized
SVGA drive. I've gotten 1024x768 w/ 16 colors on Debian after installing
the drivers. I'd like to get at least the same performance using the
standard drivers so I can use it w/ NetBSD.
If no good comes of this, what is a good video card that can get you a
decent picture on a 17' monitor w/ a screen size up to 1024x768 w/ 32 bit
colors depth? I would prefer AGP as I only have one PCI slot left. I'm looking
for as full support with XFree86 as possible. I also don't play games so
all the bells and whistles aren't important. A cost under $50 US would be
a plus.
