        no, NetBSD has support for framebuffers. I'm sure my z50 runs a
framebuffer console, and it's running NetBSD.

I wouldn't bother with X3 stuff. X 3 series is pretty much obsolete. install
X 4.1.0, and give that a try. or build X from CVS, and see if 4.1.99.1 will
work for you.
