I'm sure this must have been a frequently voiced cry for help, but I can't see a way to search the mailing list archives. If you can point me to documentation in lieu of answering directly, that'd be fine too :-)
Basically, I'm trying to figure out how to configure X on my Linux (Mandrake 8.1) laptop which has a SiS 630 video chipset. I have been able to get the 3.3.6 framebuffer server working by setting the boot time video mode so X doesn't have to configure the video card, but with this configuration I'm unable to switch back to console mode. I've had almost no luck getting the 4.x server to work. I need to be able to set things up so that an external display is driven at a different resolution to the LCD. I'm happy with just shutting off the LCD and driving just the external monitor, but I'd like to get a dual headed mode going if it's possible. I know the chipset is not well supported in the 4.x series, but should work with 3.3.6. I don't care about 3D acceleration, if that makes a difference to my options. Thanks for any help or pointers!
