Depending on what sort of unix system you are on, Ctrl-Alt-F1 may not be
exitting X at all; on Linux and BSD systems, that switches you to a
different virtual console.  Your X session is still active on another
console.  Try Ctrl-Alt-F7 or somewhere nearby, if that's the case, and
you should be able to switch back into your X session to exit it
correctly.
