Sounds to me like some kind of hardware problem. Does it not do this if you don't run X? Try turning off xdm (operating system dependent). If it only takes a couple of hours, it won't take long to eliminate X. You can probably speed it up by running something demanding, like e.g., rebuilding X or something of similar size, something that takes several hours. If gcc dies with SIGSEGV or SIGBUS, that's a pretty good indication of CPU or memory problems. Sometimes you get lucky and you can fix it by just unplugging and reseating everything that's socketed, like CPU, memory, expansion bus boards.
