Doesn't sount like an XFree86 problem to me, sounds like a text-mode
problem.  ;-)

Seriously, does it work in text mode *before* switching to graphic mode?

And what exactly do you mean by "system locks up"?  Does it respond to
ping?  telnet/rlogin/ssh?  If you can log into it, look around at what's
running (e.g., top(1)) for clues about what went wrong.
