have you tried CVS X, possibly with the patches from gatos.sourceforge.net? from what I've seen on the Xpert list, there's a good deal of work being done on ATI drivers. You might want to try asking the Xpert list about this as well. (if you haven't already... I haven't had time to read it in quite a while).
