I am installing RH 7.2 and I cannot get XFree 4.1 to work with my video card. After a week of reading HOWTO's, manuals and online help info, I still cannot get any joy with my ATI Mach 64 pro card to work with a color resolution of with over 8 bits in XFree 4.x. This card works well with RH 6.0 using XFree86 3.3.5. Under 3.3.5 I am getting 24 bit color. If I try to force the color depth to anything other than 8 bits, my server won't start. The man page for XF86Config states that I should look at the man page for the ati driver (Section 4) but this man page does not exist, even on the www.xfree.org WWW site. With the changes to the how 4.1 works compared to version 3.x, I know that the old configuration file won't work as I have tried. As the documentation for states that the ATI MACH 64 chip is supported in more than 8 bit color, I cannot figure out how to force the change to allow greater than 8 bit color support. In the ATI Adapters README file (http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/ati.html) there is mention of ChipSet, ChipID and ChipRev. I have tried playing with these settings but get no success. I may be using incorrect values as these are not documented well. I have to use SWCursor to get a mouse pointer to display. I would like to use the latest version of XFree but I have to get this system running on Wednesday. I will be forced to revert to 3.3 if I cannot get the color resolution sorted out. In my search for an answer, I have found that I am not the only one with this problem. If there is some more detailed documentation on this problem, please give me a link that I can follow.
