what happens if you just boot to a console? does it still reboot
then?
That is what is frustrating, the system seems to be fine in just a console mode. I've compiled kernels and other programs just fine. I thought that it might be a memory problem, so I tried to stress the system by compiling the kernel in three seperate terminal sessions. No problem, just kept right on working. If I just start X, and then switch to a console, I don't seem to have any problems either (although this was really not truly tested, I only worked for a short time and started a compile). It seems to be linked to being in X and either moving the mouse or typing (both have caused it).

this sounds a lot like a hardware problem. unices generally don't
spontaneously reboot. I've seen power problems do it tho. (I once saw a
machine that would spontaneously reboot if you slammed you fist down on the
table next to it).
I suppose this is possible, but it doesn't seem to have any other problems, and as much as I hate to say it, the machine is rock steady running Window ME. Which of course sucks. :)
