If you have RH 7.x /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is used for X 4.x.x. If the installation 
program decided
that X 3.3.6 was better for you then /etc/X11/XF86Config is used...
You can obviously overwrite those defaults. man XFree86 will tell you the sequence in 
which X
searches for its configuration file...
