I have a problem installing Mandrake 8.1, well its with the Xfree86 server I
think...thats why ive turned to here...

I've just shifted the three ISO images off the ftp site for 8.1, so I decided to burn
them off, and install them on my new Laptop...

The actual installation went fine, all packages I wanted installed, users setup, root
password done, NIC card configured for internet access here (@ the deanery), modem
detected (At least I think so...), Sound card detected.

Theres just one problem...the Video card. It did pick up what it was (SiS 630), and
how much ram I had allocated to it(Its a shared thing, and I picked 16M)...But when it
actually tries to display anything, my TFT screen goes a funny white...kinda scarily
like when the tube goes on your tv...I've tried both XFree86 options I got presented
with (in expert mode), but I couldnt see any 4.1 servers for installation. So it was
between 3.6.x and 3.6.x +Experimental 3D thingy. Both didnt work. Then I tried just an
unlisted card, with the SVGA server option...didnt work...

then, to make things more confusing (im lost by now), I plugged an external monitor
into the VGA port on the back of my laptop...the display came up, and sure enough as i
tested the screen, the laptop went white. But, the external monitor displayed
correctly!!!

Yay I thought...and pressed the "yes" button...then it locked up and scrambled the
display on my laptop(which stopped going white...)...I've tried pressing no, and
waiting for it to time out, and it dont work...

Im stuck as you can see, I'm not really a linux guru (although to solve this might
help ), so please....any ideas?
