This wouldn't be an advent laptop would it?
I've recently installed RedHat 7.2 on my Advent 4470 with an SiS 630 chipset. I had exactly the same video problem. To fix it all you have to do is put vga=791 into your lilo.conf (or grub.conf), and restart. (you won't be able to get back to text mode once X has started, but I don't find that a problem.) andy. So it was between 3.6.x and 3.6.x +Experimental 3D thingy. Both didnt work. Then I tried just an unlisted card, with the SVGA server option...didnt work... then, to make things more confusing (im lost by now), I plugged an external monitor into the VGA port on the back of my laptop...the display came up, and sure enough as i tested the screen, the laptop went white. But, the external monitor displayed correctly!!! Yay I thought...and pressed the "yes" button...then it locked up and scrambled the display on my laptop(which stopped going white...)...I've tried pressing no, and waiting for it to time out, and it dont work...
