Ya, you got that right.

Though, I think that had I merely *properly* removed all xine from my
system to begin with, and then reinstalled *it* and not touched X, I'd not
be in this dilemma.  It was all about Xv, and xine finding/using it.

Yep, and all under /etc, none of the X stuff is in home at all with
Mandrake 8.1

I've tried some of that, will try more, but I did backup ALL of /usr/X11R6
and /etc/X11 before installing, restoring all of that did nothing X fails,
and since no $HOME vars got changed from what I know (?)... I'm still in
this dilemma

True enough, however reinstalling X and xine *did* fix xine to within
reach of playing DVD (couldn't even play mpeg2 when I started).

You've got the whole story, can you suggest a smart starting point...
