Ya, you got that right. > Re-installing stuff doesn't fix anything, it just clobbers your > configuration. Though, I think that had I merely *properly* removed all xine from my system to begin with, and then reinstalled *it* and not touched X, I'd not be in this dilemma. It was all about Xv, and xine finding/using it. > Configuration is controlled by simple text files that > are kept under /etc or in your $HOME. Yep, and all under /etc, none of the X stuff is in home at all with Mandrake 8.1 > The stuff under /usr doesn't wear > out or rust unless you keep "re-installing" it -- just get any > configuration files that you change out of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 (some > archaeological systems still keep 'em there). I've tried some of that, will try more, but I did backup ALL of /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 before installing, restoring all of that did nothing X fails, and since no $HOME vars got changed from what I know (?)... True enough, however reinstalling X and xine *did* fix xine to within reach of playing DVD (couldn't even play mpeg2 when I started). You've got the whole story, can you suggest a smart starting point... still looking for a lifeline! _______________________________________________ Newbie mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** To unsubscribe , or change message options, see: http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/newbie
