indeed I'm coming to the same conclusion, and am gonna setup a dupe of the
xinitrc in my home, put her back into runlevel 3, setup another use
without .xinitrc in their home and start playing.

gnome was my previous, so I'm gonna try the good old:

exec gnome-session

and hope for the best, I think I was trying to start gnome itself before,
and this would explain why I get failure to connect to the session manager
errors, as the session manager is not the shell.
