I�m as newby as you are but maybe started X on os X a little bit before. 
You should write your own .xinitrc, it will bypass the standard XDarwin 
settings (where ever they can be). I suggest you to go to the fink web 
page and install fink. This is a really nice way to get all the 
application you could want. You will find there a lot of libraries, 
utilities, window managers,... The command to use is dselect (as 
superuser, sudo dselect) then update the list and select what software 
you want to install. The download/installation phase is automated. i 
suggest you to download one or few windows managers and write the 
.xinitrc to use the one you whant. Then restart XDarwin and you prefered 
wm will be used.
