Well, yes, but it's a trade-off.  If you let the dustpuppies accumulate
they'll block the airflow and cause over-heating.  You'll probably have
to take it apart to clean out the dust that's most likely to cause
problems, so you'll have to power it off for a little while.  If you
only cycle the power a few times a year you'll probably junk it before
the power cycles cause any damage.

OK, good.  You have plenty of network bandwidth, and you can still do
email while your BSD machine is down.  What I'd suggest is that you
upgrade to FreeBSD 4.5 and XFree86 4.2.0, both of which were released
very recently.  Not that there's any problem with FreeBSD 4.2, but since
you're just getting started you may as well go with the latest release. 
The big advantage is from newer packages.  The KDE stuff on your 4.2 CDs
is 15 months old, and I believe those folks have made some progress in
that time.

To enable your soundcard you just need to add a line "device pcm" to
your kernel configuration file and build a new kernel.
