I'm sure that's 1024 Kilobytes. The 15/16/24 bits controls how many
colors you can display at once. You'll need (at least) that many bits
per pixel. E.g., with 1024 Kbytes (1 Mbytes) you could display 1152X900
at 8 bits per pixel (256 colors), or 800X600 at 15 or 16 bits per pixel
("thousands of colors"), or 640X480 at 24 bits per pixel ("millions of
colors").

Perfectly adequate. Remember, it's just as good now as it was when it
was new, they wear out very slowly. See .sig below.

/usr/X11R6/bin/startx (unless those Nurnbergers have hidden it someplace
else) is a shell script that sets up some parameters and environmental
stuff, then runs /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit. In turn, xinit runs
/usr/X11R6/bin/X, which should be a link (like a nickname or alias) for
the X server, /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA for example.

Low resolution won't cause them not to "load". You'd better tell us the
error message exactly.

I'm not familiar with Suse, but XFree86 is normally kept in /usr/X11R6.
All the executables are in /usr/X11R6/bin. With XFree86 version 3.3.x,
most of the configuration files were in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 and below.
Now that last is something that Suse might reasonably have changed. In
fact, with version 4 XFree86 moved them under /etc (where they belong).
