First of all we need to know which Version of X you've got. My general experience is ATI->upgrade to 4.2.0. Second: debian woody - that's 3.0 AFAIR. Still has beta status IIRC. Tho it is said that deb betas are more stable than other's finals... What you refer to as 2.4.16 is the Linux kernel version, not the distro.
check X -version and post here.
