Does that mean you did not use the Xinstall.sh script, as "strongly
recommended" by http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Install3.html#3 ?  Why not?

Did that garbage just happen in the mail, or was it really in your log
like that?

If it's any reassurance, I installed 4.2.0 on 4.5-stable a couple of
weeks ago, using Xinstall.sh, and it worked without any hitch at all.
