EIA-RS232 specifies a D shell connector with 25 pins in two rows. Many
PeeCee serial ports use a D shell connector with 9 pins in two rows.
What D shell means here is that if you look into the disconnected
connector, the shell is shaped like the letter D. Normal, vacuum-tube
PC monitors use a 15 pin connector specified by VESA. The shell is the
same as the 9-pin serial port connector, but inside are 15 pins in three
rows.

I don't really know anything about digital flat-panel displays, but a
quick Google found this: http://www.cable4pc.com/dfp.htm which has nice
pictures of various monitor cable connectors, all of which seem to have
the D-shaped shell, but none look anything like RS232.

You should keep the discussion on the list, not privately to me, because
I don't really know anything about digital flat-panel displays.
