Actually, none of this has anything to do with XFree86.

X11 doesn't deal with sound in any way.

That's purely a function of the window manager.  Maybe there's an Ice
window manager mailing list?

Doesn't your ethernet adapter get ifconfig'ed when the system boots up? 
Nothing to do with X11, in any case.

An Apple mailing list would probably get better responses for the sound
and networking problems.  Something specific to Ice window manager for
that one.  Good luck.
