Did you have sound before? If not, you may need to run the
"sndconfig" utility.
Otherwise - When I configured my window manager's sounds and then
tried a
different window manager - I had to set up the activity sounds again
for the
window manager. Sometimes, the changes didn't take effect until the
next login.

If you're using dial-up access, then first you'll need to edit and
use the ppp files.
In RH (maybe others) there are 3, often something like ppp-up,
ppp-down and
ppp-on-dialer. As I recall (vaguely, the exact info is at home, I'm
at work)...
        a. Copy the files to your user directory
        b. Edit the ppp dialer (it's a sample connection script, sub the
generic info
with your provider's info) and save.
        c. Chmod +x the files
        d. Execute the dial up via typing in the full path to the ppp-on.
This isn't exact, but may help you get on-line till you resolve the
gui issues.

Second - My distribution came with Lynx, a text-based browser. If
you have it,
then you may be in luck, type in 'lynx' and you're browsing...

Again - disclaimer; I'm doing this from memory, I can almost guarantee the
syntax
is wrong somewhere. If you want, e-mail me directly; I'll check my notes at
home,
see what I can do. I had to learn this the last time I couldn't run X...

While this isn't strictly X-related, if you only have a single system and
can't get X
running, you need a way to stay in contact to get it running, so I see text
based
access as a troubleshooting tool.
