Sorry but RH 7.x and I believe a couple of other distributions install both 3.3.6 and 
4.x.x They
set the one or the other active depending on whether the video adapter is  accelerated 
or not in
4.x.x
I agree with you that this confuses many people as you can see in this list with them 
mentioning
XF86_SVGA and X 4.x in the same sentence. 
However, it does allow one to fine tune on older equipment (in my case, for instance, 
I kept 3.3.6
on an old laptop because the card was not accelerated in 4.1, I can tell you that with 
kde it made
a lot of difference in the response time... In my newer desktop I do run 4.1, having 
the same
distro on both does simplify matters)
