I'm fully up and running with much thanks to the group here. In short, I downloaded and saved the files for 4.2.0 onto a Windows partiton and reinstalled my Red Hat 7.1 Linux completely (skipping X configuration). When finished, I transfered the dozen or so files into the /tmp directory and ran the Xinstall.sh file. I selected "n" for overwriting configuration files and "y" to establish links. When it was done, I ran Xconfigurator from the prompt, selected Trident Cyberblade (generic) and Generic 1024x768 Laptop display. Let it probe, set my video memory to 8MB (couldn't auto detect like version 3.6). Then accept the test. On restart the KDE prompt looked normal and was able to log in just fine with full functionality.
Thanks again to everyone that helped me solve the issue. I will do a newbie-level how-to for Linux Laptops since my model isn't listed.
Cheers all,
Michael Derksen
