Hi,
Problem with the vesa is that it is not accelerated. I have an old laptop with an S3
Inc.|86cM65 [Aurora64V+] and 2MB I can run it with V4 and VESA, but V3 and SVGA 
(accelerated) runs
much faster so I downgraded. Actually KDE 2.2.1, gnome etc... run quite well on V3
