the ones included with distributions sometimes don't work perfectly, more likely to have wider chip coverage if you download X separately, i got it with slackware and it pooped, i downloaded separate and it works better, not perfectly, but still.  if you try a download of an older version it might cover some hardware that has lost favour but which a few still have.
