Funny or may be not so funny,
The [Ctrl][Alt] + numeric [+] or [-] will take you through your screen modes.
Check your XF86Config for the default screen. Some times it helps to put
your desired resolution first in your
Subsection "Display"
"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
or what ever you have.
