This is not stupid: not everyone knows that the resolution which displays as you start X is the first on on the mode line of the display subsection in your /etc/X11/XF86Config (resp XF86Config-4). Just edit the file. The screen section should be pretty far down. There you will find a DefaultDepth line followed by one or more display subsections. The display subsection which interest you is the one with the defaultdepth as depth. There go to the mode line and either remove all resolution which you don't want or reorder the resolutions with the resolution you want first...
