Why you don`t set a waypoint while you make notes?

I did and continue to use waypoints for my travels

One place I used them extensively was surveying the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)

I compiled my notes into spreadsheets

http://pctmap.homeip.net/data/pct/xls

PCT Section C 2006_09_12.xls is a good example

The Y2K and Y05 miles are from a book the "PCT DATA BOOK" and the Sections are from a Guide book to the PCT

The segments are my effort to ease data collection, but they are geographic segments and have a waypoint prefix of C(segement)(miles) so in Section C Segment A waypoint CA0032 is a Dirt road @ powerlines 0.32 miles from Tamarack RD Just north of I-10

Don't know if this is relevant to what you are doing... Thought I throw it out there

Matt
