I've been mapping by taking photos since I started in 2005 so I can thoroughly recommend it. There is a built in photo viewer for JOSM however I personally think the optional AgPifoJ plug-in is superior, especially as it doesn't eat memory. Once the plug-in is loaded simply select the "open images with..." from the File menu. You synchronise the time on the photos with the GPX. The easiest way to do that is take a photograph of your GPS displaying the precise time. Alternatively its pretty easy to set the Camera to GMT and as long as the camera time is within a minute of the GPS time then you only need to adjust the synchronisation of the photoset by +/- 60 seconds. Easy enough to then sync manually once you have tried it a few times. The benefit of this latter approach is that you don't need a photo of the GPS displaying the time.
