I cannot imagine using any mapping tool without displaying street
names by default.

I did some googling and wasn't able to come up with an answer to this.
 I'm only assuming this feature doesn't already exist.


A plain wireframe is not useful to me since I don't have all locations
memorized in this way.

Mouseover on streets is horribly slow and clumsy.  Middle-clicking is
the same way.

I saw in this thread about osmarender:

but osmarender is terribly clumsy to use and doesn't even seem to
bring up anything useful for what I'm looking at.  I just see some
fuzzy lines.


What I'm expecting to see are thick streets and paths, each with their
name, just like the non-editing view.  A hotkey to toggle back and
forth from this mode would be helpful.
