We pride ourselves in doing things you never imagined possible. :p Anyway, in Potlatch (Flash), use the options box - which you bring up by clicking the little tick icon - to select a map background that makes sense for you. Maybe the standard OSM Mapnik background would be easiest. If the existing ways are getting in the way, you can quickly dim them by pressing Caps Lock.
