The answer to this, is to use a route relation. Relations group nodes and ways which share a particular characteristic, in this case that they're a part of the Ouse Valley Way, multiple relations can contain a particular way, so you can, for example, also have a section which belongs to a cycle route without any tagging conflict.
The wiki page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation:route contains all the details you could ever need, including step-by-step instructions on how to create and apply relations to your ways. You may also want to take a look over http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_Kingdom_Long_Distance_Paths which is tracking the mapping progress of the UK's LDPs. 2009/6/30 Trevor Hook <[email protected]>: > I've started mapping the Ouse Valley Way which is a long distance path > running through East Anglia but I've run into a problem. > > The route is using footpath/bridges etc which have already been named, > when I go to name the route by selecting all the paths used by the route > I've mapped so far, JOSM appears to be overwritting the name name of the > individual components of the route (i.e. a bridge can only have 1 name > tag but could have several routes running over it). > > How am I suppose to handle this situations?
