I do quite a few long-distance paths like this. By now everyone will have
told you to use relations! You might also want to look at

Paths

And edit to keep it up to date - it's a very useful summary.

Subject: [OSM-newbies] Long Distance Hiking Routes

I've started mapping the Ouse Valley Way which is a long distance path
running through East Anglia but I've run into a problem.

The route is using footpath/bridges etc which have already been named, when
I go to name the route by selecting all the paths used by the route I've
mapped so far, JOSM appears to be overwritting the name name of the
individual components of the route (i.e. a bridge can only have 1 name tag
but could have several routes running over it).

How am I suppose to handle this situations? Select everything that makes up
the route and name it Ouse Valley Way anyway?

Thanks
Trevor
