I've started mapping the Ouse Valley Way which is a long distance path
running through East Anglia but I've run into a problem.

The route is using footpath/bridges etc which have already been named,
when I go to name the route by selecting all the paths used by the route
I've mapped so far, JOSM appears to be overwritting the name name of the
individual components of the route (i.e. a bridge can only have 1 name
tag but could have several routes running over it).

How am I suppose to handle this situations? Select everything that makes
up the route and name it Ouse Valley Way anyway?

Dont name the nodes and ways that make up a route. As you've already
said they often have their own name.

Use a relation to group the objects and then add the route metadata to it.
