On the Ubuntu side, make sure your Userid has Administrator privilege for mount/unmount. Just added my wife to admin, adm groups to allow her to use her camera card, forgot to do that after last upgrade.
Re thomas.meller - Yes powered hubs can sometimes help, Un-powered hubs can be a problem, including the builtin hub sometimes.
