James, A crosswalk is just a single node with: highway=crossing crossing=uncontrolled.
In the UK the orange flashing lights are just warning beacons, there is no control of the crossing. The UK uses animal names to describe crossing types: Zebra crossing = uncontrolled foot crossing Pelican crossing = light uncontrolled foot crossing Toucan crossing = light controlled foot+horse+bicycle crossing In OSM just add access tags to indicate who is allowed to use the crossing, e.g.: foot=yes horse=no bicycle=no Nick.
