if possible (and if you're on redhat), i'd recommend trying to find files in .rpm format. if you can do that, then, to install you type: rpm -Uvh nameOfFile.rpm tar.gz or tgz, you type: tar -zxvf nameOfFile.tgz <or tar.gz> and then open the README file in the directory created, to find out what needs to be done from there... usually, it involves running ./configure and make, and occasionally something else as well... .zip, i'd use: unzip nameOfFile.zip and then open the readme to find out what else to do... does that help? ~Erin
