tar.gz or tgz, you type:
tar -zxvf nameOfFile.tgz <or tar.gz>
just wanted to add: .tar.bz2 or .tbz or .tbz2: tar -jxvf nameOfFile.tar.bz2
My recommendation would be to create a src directory, either in / or ~ where you can dump all the files you download and extract them. Certainly helps me.
But if you're using Red Hat, or any other friendly, modern Linux distro, there should be some kind of installation GUI for new programs that you can browse through.
