For something like this, I'd strongly suggest you get a package manager, like apt-get or yum, (see http://ayo.freshrpms.net) and use them. It should be a simple matter of getting the appropriate rpm for the tool for your version from this website, install it with an "rpm -i package.rpm", and from then on, just do a "apt-get install package" or "yum install package". Both of these have their strengths and weaknesses, but both will probably work for you, especially since Gimp is a pretty common program. Now, understand that this will not simply make the dependencies go away, but it will try to resolve them for you. It'll tell you which dependent packages it wants to install, and if you say it's okay, it will download and install the package and all it's dependencies. Now, not every package is part of the repository, but there are quite a few, and I know that Gimp specificially is in it.

Also, these tools will help you keep everything up to date. If you want to upgrade to the latest stable version for each of the packages on your system, it only takes two commands for apt-get, and one for yum:

apt-get update (to update the cache from the server)
apt-get upgrade (to do the actual upgrading)

yum update (or yum upgrade - they're both the same)

I hope this helps, Lloyd,

I just decided to attempt to "upgrade" Gimp on my
machine (which I guess is just the same as installing
from scratch). I'm running RH9, but I could only find
an RPM for Fedora Core 1. I didn't think it was the
right one for me, but I got it and tried it anyway,
but was then faced with a long list of dependencies
that need to be taken care of first. I've found some
of them in tarballs, zipped in various formats, but
now what? How do I get them into thier proper places,
configured properly, and such

Any help would be appreciated.
(I wouldn't mind seeing something like this at an UUG
meeting, but I think I'm the only real newbie that
occasionally attends (sorry, astronomy's not my
thing)).
