Looks like it doesn't want to use ppp, it wants to use L2TP, but I wasn't aware that was possible over a serial line... DSL isn't all that much more expensive depending on how you do it, and you'll spend less time waiting for pages to load (not to mention downloads) so really it's a huge benefit (was for me anyway, Oh the hours I used to spend waiting for a download to fail... I shudder to recall).
