I have had a problem with the versions of modem tools with mandrake. I
use wvdial. It works great for me. I've never had a problem with it.
(connexant modems and linuxant drivers is another story)

1) get the package on the computer(it came with the mandrake and red hat
cd's I think, you may have to install some dependent packages)

2) create a text file called /etc/wvdial.conf

3) to configure the modem use "wvdialconfig /etc/wvdial.conf"
wvdialconfig will test to find your modem then test "safe"
        speeds

4) edit /etc/wvdial.conf and add your user name, password and phone
number

5) then "wvdial" in the console should hook you up to the internet

6) ctrl + c will disconnect you cleanly.

There on some tutorials on the internet about how to use wvdial.
