I don't know if SuSE has an amd64 version, but at work, my boss had to spend quite a bit of time to get the debian for amd64 to work on our new quad-opteron database server. He finally did get it, but it was a lot more trouble than I'd like to take on. I think, though, it had more to do with the fact that the two boot images we found both had driver issues. The one didn't have the broadcom 5700 ethernet driver, and the other didn't have support for the RAID controller. Go figure. You'd probably have a much easier time on a consumer box, though.

Take it for what its worth.

Does Suse have a 64 bit version? I would think that Debian would be a more
natural choice for the system you described. The idea of wasting 32
beautiful bits per clock cycle makes me cry...

I'm about to buy an Athlon 64 3000+, anybody know what I need to do in
this install to get the optimal system? Will it discover this
automatically? My evaluation DVD's include Suse pro 8.2 and 9.1. Which
version should I install?
