Typically you only want to turn on power saving features when you're not
plugged in, so you write a script for the acpi daemon to run on battery
plug/unplug to toggle these settings. 

Always running in laptop mode can actually be dangerous due to the
nature of laptop mode. Briefly, if your computer dies because it runs
out of battery, you lose a much larger chuck of data than you would
otherwise, it's recommended to shutoff laptop mode before your battery
dies, or you're plugged in.

ACPI sleep and suspend are touchy areas. The reason you're not finding a
good tutorials is it is different for every laptop. Some laptops sleep
well, some which don't. Suspend can be even harder. To get information
