Yep, a script would work.  You can learn about the /etc/init.d and
/etc/rc?.d directories and runlevels and so forth if you want.

Also, there is a program called acpid that can monitor acpi events and
execute a script when something happens, like when you plug/unplug it or
when you open/close the lid, or when you press the power button.

With 2.6 kernel you want to play with the /sys/power/state file.  With
2.4 kernel you want to play with the /proc/acpi/sleep file.  Take a look
