I can't think what would cause this. I have an mtu of 1500 (I don't think it's ever been less than that) on all of my computers, and with all of the networks I've been on, I've never seen it be a problem. I'd recommend using Ethereal and seeing what's going on the wire. I'll take a look if you do, as root, "tcpdump -w webproblem.dump", try to go to a few web pages, and then do ^C to stop tcpdump. I'll take a look if you get the dump to me somehow (just don't email a 10MB file).
